Staying active is a real challenge for a lot of people and many believe that the only way to get proper exercise is by going to a gym — which is just not true! Staying active looks different for everyone, but it can be as simple as going for a walk or waking up for morning yoga. Oftentimes even the smallest choices and lifestyle changes can make a big difference.

This May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and we want to encourage all of our patients to stay as active as possible, regardless of their health limitations. That’s why we’ve put together a list of 10 ideas on how to get fit and ways to stay active that you can pick and choose from, depending on your ability.

1. Get A Morning Stretch

Take about 10 to 15 minutes each morning to do some stretches. Reach your hands up over your head, try to touch your toes, or whatever else feels right. Stretching is a great way to get yourself loose and start off the day de-stressed. Just remember to breath!

2. Calming Evening Yoga

Doing yoga is a great way to stay limber, flexible, and balanced. Yoga is a light to moderate workout that increases your breathing and heart rate but is not too exerting. For people looking for a more intense workout, there are advanced level classes that will work up a real sweat and test your body’s limits.

3. Go For A Walk

Walks around the block, or even down the street and back, are a fantastic way to get daily exercise without wearing yourself out. Next time you go for a walk, you can take your dog, or you can meet with a friend to catch up on life.

4. Garden or Yard Work

If you like being outdoors, gardening is a great, light activity you can enjoy while sitting or kneeling. If you’re feeling up for it, you can try doing some light yard work, or mowing the grass. You’ll probably work up a sweat but feel pretty refreshed afterwards (or ready for a nap!).

5. Clean The Car

Whether it’s giving it a wash, a vacuum, or a full interior wipe down, cleaning your car can be a great way to stay active while also doing something productive. You can always just take it slow and steady!

6. Walk The Golf Course

If you’re really trying to fit in some extra activity, ditch the golf cart and take a walk between each swing (we’re not golfing experts here). After an hour or two, you’ll probably be ready to take a seat for some lunch in the shade.

7. Sign Up For Dance Lessons

Exercise doesn’t feel like exercise when we’re having fun, right? So, if you like dancing, or if you want to learn how to dance, try signing up for a dance class and go a few times a week.

8. Go For A Swim

Swimming is a super great exercise that will have you burning calories without even knowing. If you’re not feeling up for laps, you can always use a pool noodle to boost yourself around lightly.

9. Park At The Back

When you’re circling a parking lot trying to find a spot, it’s pretty tempting to try to go for the one closest to where you’re trying to get. One easy way to add your steps for the day is to simply park in the back of the parking lot (which will actually probably save you time trying to find parking).

10. Take The Stairs

You’ve probably heard this tip plenty of times before, but hoisting yourself up repeatedly actually does do a lot of good to your body, and it can also motivate you to do other, more active things.

Knowing how to get fit and staying active doesn’t take a lot, and you don’t have to switch your whole schedule around just to add more activity into your life. Just by following some or all of these simple tips you can start to make your heart and your body stronger. This National Physical Fitness And Sports Month is a great time to start adding a little extra activity into your daily life.
