History of Sonography and Its Uses

How Sonograms Work

Sonograms are performed by apply a gel to the area that needs to be examined, and this gel conducts the sound waves from the ultrasound transducer to the area receiving the sonogram.  As the waves are deflected off of the internal structures, an image is created and analyzed on a monitor by the sonographer. Visual cues assist the sonographer is analyzing whether or not a body part is healthy. The most important images can be stored and sent to a physician for further analysis.

Sonography vs Ultrasound

While an ultrasound and a sonogram may sound very different, they actually use similar technology when used in diagnostic imaging. Essentially, an ultrasound is the image created using sonography.  The use of these high-pitched sound waves, or ultra sounds, is created by an ultrasound machine and creates a sonogram.  Ultrasounds can be used to discover kidney stones, detect prostate cancer, and measure the blood flow through kidneys.
