If you’re ever in the middle of an MRI scan that takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours, you’ll see you get a pretty good amount of time just laying still and being quiet. During that time, you might think about your to do list, things to pick up at the store on the way home, hoping your scans come back healthy, and any number of other things.
But among those questions, you might wonder about the doctor who is behind it all. Where are they from? How much (and what type of) schooling did they go through so that they could help you in this way? Most of all, you may wonder, how much are they getting paid for this?
Here are their salaries.
We’ve all heard that doctors make a lot of money compared to the rest of us, but just how much are they making? According to salary.com, the average salary for a Radiologist in the United States is about $381,000. Yes, that’s right…big number, huh? There’s more though, to be more specific, the average salary for a Radiologist in New York, New York is about $441,000 and the top 90% make over $573,000.
It doesn’t all go directly in their pocket.
Although these numbers are pretty high, there are a few things to consider. The first is the amount of schooling these physicians have to go through in order to practice and the cost of that schooling. In total, it’s 4 years of undergraduate studies, 4 years of graduate studies in medical school, and generally another 4 years in a residency or fellowship program–the more specific the field, the long the residency. Additionally, medical school in New York costs over $50,000 a year, and after four years that comes out to over $200,000–generally in loans.
On top of that, physicians have to pay additional fees like malpractice insurance, which can be anywhere between $10,000 and $50,000, depending on the specialty and location.
